Research Statement

Dr. Brody’s research interests have focused on casting and solidification, computer aided design of materials processing, and engineering education. With his students and colleagues, Dr. Brody has contributed to our basic understanding of the dendritic solidification of alloys and in particular to the redistribution of solute during the solidification of binary and multicomponent alloys; to the numerical simulation of casting and solidification processes; including microsegregation, coupled heat transfer and fluid flow, solidification rate, thermal stress, and porosity; and to the development of quantitative criteria to predict the quality and soundness of castings, including criteria to be used in conjunction with software for computer aided design of casting processes. As an innovator in engineering education, Dr. Brody and his colleagues have pioneered in integrating engineering problem solving and engineering design throughout the curriculum.
