MSE Says Good-bye to a Beloved Staff Member

By Amanda Campanaro

cathy2_w_edSome students know her by the perpetually-full M&M jar on her desk, and some know her as a staff member who has been with the MSE department since the very beginning. Regardless of how Cathy McCrackan, Administrative Coordinator in MSE, has impacted the lives of the faculty, staff and students here, she will surely be missed once she retires at the end of December.

Dozens of faculty and staff attended a retirement gathering hosted for Cathy on Monday December 12 to celebrate her loyal work of 13 years at the University and wish her the best for her future, which she plans to spend camping with her dog in various U.S. states she has not yet seen.

“Cathy has worked with me for over 5 years” says Professor Alpay, Department Head. “When Chemical, Materials, and Biomolecular Engineering (CMBE) was separated into two departments in late 2012, Cathy was the only staff member for the entire MSE Department. She was always very helpful to our faculty and all our students. She made a difference and will be missed by all of us.”

Cathy first joined UConn in 2003 in the Metallurgy and Materials Engineering department, and transitioned to MSE in 2012, where she has worked faithfully for four years. Since Lorri LaFontaine’s arrival in 2014, Cathy, a military veteran, was mainly responsible for undergraduate program related tasks. She helped twice with the accreditation process (ABET) of MSE.
